KOTOR
Located along one of Montenegro's most beautiful bays is Kotor, a city of traders and famous sailors, with many stories to tell. The Old City of Kotor is a well preserved urbanization typical of the middle Ages, built between the 12th and 14th century. Medieval architecture and numerous monuments of cultural heritage have made Kotor a UNESCO listed “World Natural and Historical Heritage Site".
Through the entire city the buildings are criss-crossed with narrow streets and squares. One of these squares contains the Cathedral of Saint Tryphon (Sveti Tripun), a monument of Roman culture and one of the most recognizable symbols of the city. The Church of Saint Luke (Sveti Luka) from the 13th century, Church of Saint Ana (Sveta Ana) from the 12th century, Church of Saint Mary (Sveta Marija) from the 13th century, Church of the Healing Mother of God (Gospe od Zdravlja) from the 15th century, the Prince’s Palace from the 17th century and the Napoleon’s Theatre from the 19th century are all treasures that are part of the rich heritage of Kotor. Carnivals and festivals are organized each year to give additional charm to this most beautiful city of the Montenegrin littoral. You simply can not afford to miss a visit to Kotor.
Kotor is a town with many diverse stories and legends. Its almost every part, every stone with which its streets are paved, palaces which surround certain parts of the town, monuments which it has, can tell a very nice story, a true story or some catch.
Already when we pronounce the word Kotor, we immediately recollect other parts (lodgments), which are also parts of Kotor like: Perast, Prcanj, Risan, Dobrota etc.
So when we are mentioning Dobrota, here is a story about its foundation:
Two travelers, who were traveling around the world, came to the grey sea. As they were already exhausted from the long trip, they sat on some kind of a rock to get some rest and to refresh themselves. One of them moved a little bit t a side and noticed a plaque with some inscription on it. The inscription said: "Measure 10 lengths dig and stop". When they read that, they wondered what could that be, so they started to guess together what that instruction could mean. At one moment they came to an idea to measure 10 lengths with the plaque, and so they did. When they measured the required length, they started to dig a small hole in the ground and they found some kind of a small chest. They tried to open it, but to their astonishment, the chest opened by itself.
At the bottom of the chest with golden letters it was written "this is everyone goodness". For a long time they thought what they should do?! Whether to stay where they are, or to continue their journey? Still, as the message was like some kind of a vow, they stayed in the place where they have found the message. At the same place they quickly made a cottage, and went to sleep.
During the night something very strange happened. From the wooden chest, some new shiny letters glimmered. The new message said: "Wish whatever you want before sleep"!!! As both of the travelers from the beginning of the story were poor, they wished for nice stone houses and beautiful wives. When they woke up in the morning they were speechless. They saw a white castle and a woman on the window looking towards the sea. They immediately moved into the new home, and continued to live in ease. Since that, every night before they went to sleep they wished for another nice house, of which every morning one emerged.
That is how Dobrota, near Kotor, was founded.
Stone houses and numerous palaces, which later were built, are the most beautiful details of Dobrota.
When we are talking about tourism, in that area, Kotor is not the greatest town. Considering the fact that mainly it is a town of the extraordinary cultural value, for centuries it developed in that direction. The number of sandy beaches is almost led down to a minimum. A culturally – historical town of Kotor, has several stony beaches, mostly in front of hotels. On them you have 2 or 3 rows of easy chairs with parasols. The summers are warm and dry, and the winters are mild and humid. The average temperature doesn’t surpass 15, 2 ºC. 213 days in a year are without any wind, and the swimming season lasts for 144 days in a year. Two sandy beaches, with very small capacities, are found in the places Orahovac and Ljuta, and they are several kilometers away from the center of the town, on the way towards Risan.
You can often see smaller cafés situated along the stony shore or by the lower part of the road in Kotor, on which except the summer refreshment with various juices, or drinks, visitors are offered with easy chairs for sunbathing and umbrellas, as well as the swimming in the sea of bay of Boka Kotorska.
If the nature itself and Kotor charm you that much that there is no reason for you to spend your vacation in some other town on the Montenegrin coast, then we are convinced that you will manage with the swimming and sunbathing in Kotor. After all, almost every visitor or guest of Kotor will easily confirm you, that the refreshment from summer heats is simple even in Kotor, which almost doesn’t have sandy beaches. Actually, if the enjoyment and relaxing in the sea is most important for you, then we can say that Koto wit its stony shore – instead of real beaches – is an ideal place for you. If you follow our short rule, you will easily have a good rest. Here is how you’re going to do that: bring a bigger towel with yourself, find any part of the smooth stony shore, sit for a while, 1 – 2 minutes prepare yourself, jump into the water, have a nice swim, come back, dry yourself and after that observe the far blue shore, from the place where the murmur of other swimmers will not disturb your peace of which you have dreamt, in your big towns from which you are coming.
